Okay, well, maybe not forever. But at least until you make some changes.

What is an Instagram Bio?

An Instagram bio is the small area under your username where you can share some details about yourself or your brand. Your Instagram bio can include a brief self or brand description, contact information, emojis, hashtags and more.

Here’s an example of one of the best bios on Instagram:

Marie Forleo has a strong Insta bio. The first line is used to describe who she is: ‘CEO. Writer. #MarieTV. Fancy Dancer.’

The second line of her cool bio is used for social proof : ‘Named by Oprah “Thought leader for next generation.”’ I don’t know about you, but to me, this says that she’s worth following.

The third line of this short bio for Instagram describes what she does: ‘Learn to get *anything* you want.’

And the last line is her CTA, which links to a free content download. She also included two emojis to make the text easier to read and draw extra attention.

If you’re looking for Instagram bio ideas for girls, Marie Forleo’s Instagram bio formula is worth copying.

Instagram Bio Template to Follow

You can write your Instagram bio any way you want to. Here are a few Instagram bio tips that you might want to add based on popular trends. If you want to become an Instagram master, follow these tips and sign up for the   Instagram course today.

1. Include a Description of Yourself

The best Instagram bios tend to have a self-description. Things to consider adding: your job title(s), the company you own or work for, some claims to fame, things you love, and what makes you stand out.

Queen Latifah’s Instagram bio does a great job of describing her. In the first line of her bio she writes, ‘Actor/Rapper/Singer/Producer.’ When people visit her fanpage, they’ll learn that she’s more than just an actor and may check out her other gigs to learn more about her.

Plus, that little blue tick shows up on her page, so people will immediately understand that she’s famous when visiting her Instagram account . One of the Instagram bio tips Queen Latifah teaches us is that you can learn a lot about a person even from a short bio.

2. List Your Interests

To make a good first impression, you need to connect with your audience.

How can you do that? By sharing your interests.

For example Paola Antonini’s Instagram bio shares a subtle hint about who she is and what her Instagram is all about. For her interests, she shares, “Lifestyle | Travel | Gratitude.”

When you see the word gratitude thrown in there, you get a little intrigued. And after scrolling through some pictures, you immediately see that she has a prosthetic leg.

And much of her Instagram includes pictures of her living life, travelling, and having fun, which makes her interesting to follow. Pretty sure her 2.6 million followers agree.

The best bio will always be the one that’s easy to read and takes your most enticing interests, which are two important Instagram bio tips to copy.

3. Share Your Contact Information

If you’re the owner of a fan page or business, or you’re a public figure, your Instagram bio should include your contact information.

Most people write something like ‘For business enquiries, email [email protected]’ You can also direct people to your DM for sending messages.

The app company A Color Story includes their email address in their Instagram bio for easy communication. The whole goal of social media is to be social, after all, so making your contact information more accessible is one of those Instagram bio tips you have to follow.

4. Add a Call to Action

Whether you’re a business owner or an influencer , having a call to action in your Instagram bio is a must.

Remember: you’ve got one link that you can include for users to click on. So throw in a request to ‘sign up for my course,’ ‘check out my latest blog post,’ or ‘shop the hottest fashion products now.’

Tony Robbins’ Instagram bio example includes the CTA ‘👇 Watch the Documentary 🎥.’ The finger emoji points down to the link to get some extra attention.

8 Ways to Level-up Your Instagram Bio

By Amanda Demeku

Updated on August 17, 2022

9 minute read

Say hello to the new digital handshake. 🤝

Published January 25, 2021

Stay on top of the biggest social media marketing trends!

Nowadays, your Instagram bio is pretty much a cover letter, portfolio, and website all wrapped up in one.

And with just seconds (and limited character space) to introduce yourself and convey your value, how do you decide which details to include?

We've got you covered. We're sharing eight tips to craft a memorable Instagram bio so you can make a lasting impression:

What Is an Instagram Bio?

Geographically, an Instagram bio sits beneath your profile picture and is used to describe the contents of your page.

This space includes:

A display name (aka the name field)

Page category

150 character description

One external link

Contact information

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Later

And because your bio is often the first touch point for new visitors, it’s the perfect opportunity to communicate who you are, and what you offer, straight from the jump (more on that below!).

Pssst, level-up your Instagram bio with Linkin.bio by Later — a mini web page built into your profile that makes your content more clickable. Sign up today — for free!

What Makes a Good Instagram Bio?

A good Instagram bio can mean the difference between a visitor hitting follow, or tapping away.

And with only 150 characters to set the stage, the greats keep their bios short, sweet, and most importantly, informative.

Check out how the Black in Fashion Council account communicates what they’re all about in one concise sentence:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Black in Fashion Council

You can also use your bio to encourage users to take action — whether it's through a compelling CTA (call-to-action) to your website or a branded hashtag for collecting UGC (u ser-generated content ).

For example, see how Book of the Month implores users to join their branded hashtag — resulting in over 500K posts:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile with call-to-action included: Book of the month

Suffice it to say, action + your brand’s story = an increase in engagement and conversions, too.

8 Instagram Bio Ideas

Ready to learn what it takes to create a killer Instagram bio? Here are eight tactics to stand out from the crowd:

Share Your Story

Include Targeted Keywords in the Name Field

Use a Link in Bio Tool

Add a Call-To-Action and Action Buttons

Share Your Contact Information

Choose a Relevant Profile Picture

Tag Related Accounts and Add Your Branded Hashtag

Use Instagram Stories Highlights

Instagram Bio Idea #1: Share Your Story

Like Charles Wright once sang, express yourself!

Think of your Instagram bio as a 150-character sales pitch.

Whether it’s a bulleted list or a few short lines, use this space to speak directly to your target audience and detail your story.

That way, new visitors and prospective customers will understand you or your brand, immediately.

Take a look at how Sarah Chetrit introduces herself, and what her page offers in three succinct lines:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Sarah Chetrit

By laying down the groundwork and communicating her value, this fine-tuned bio has the power to turn visitors into followers.

P. S. Don’t be afraid to add a bit of personality to the mix. Emojis and relevant puns are highly encouraged here.

Instagram Bio Idea #2: Use Targeted Keywords in the Name Field

Did you know that the name field in your Instagram bio is completely separate from your username?

It’s a valuable (and rarely used!) SEO tactic to reach even more users as they search — improving your visibility on the app.

So, take a moment to brainstorm keywords your ideal customer might search for on Instagram. This could be your niche, the products you sell, or the city your business is located.

Once you find the right keywords, pop them in!

For example, check out how content creator Lauren Toyota uses the name field to reveal more about her page:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Lauren Toyota

Rather than simply using “chef”, Lauren includes the keywords, “vegan chef” to open up a world of discovery for her account.

Now, if someone searches “vegan chef” on Instagram’s Explore Page, Lauren's account has a better chance of appearing in the list of results:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile showing up in explore page: Lauren Toyota

Just remember to consider what your visitors might be looking for and use your Instagram bio’s name field to your advantage!

Looking to boost your SEO ranking? We’re sharing 3 easy ways to increase your discoverability in the video below:

Instagram Bio Idea #3: Use a Link in Bio Tool

Your Instagram bio only allows one external link, so it’s important to be strategic about how you use it.

Enter: Later's link in bio tool, Linkin.bio.

With Linkin.bio , you can create a landing page with unlimited button links and a clickable version of your Instagram feed.

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile incuding a link in bio tool: Later

This makes it easier to direct followers to specific web pages referenced in your posts, without having to frequently update the URL in your Instagram bio.

And the best news? It’s free!

Plus, with Later’s Shopify integration, you can tag up to five products directly in your Linkin.bio feed posts:

In other words: a faster and more streamlined checkout experience for your customers. Talk about a serious win-win.

Instagram Bio Idea #4: Add a Call-To-Action and Action Buttons

If you want to drive more engagement from your bio, all you have to do is ask!

For example, if you’re offering a new promo, a resource, or requesting a follow, make sure to let your profile visitors know.

Apostrophe invites users to partake in a CTA by tagging their account for a chance to be featured:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profiles: Apostrophe

Whichever CTA (or CTAs) you choose, remember to be clear and specific.

The clearer you are, the better the chance of driving tons of traffic and engagement.

Another tactic to encourage more taps on your profile? Make use of those Action Buttons.

Depending on your account, you can include: Order food, Book now, Get quote, Reserve, or View shop.

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Fonda Balam, Tarta Gelatina

This way, you create an easier access point to yourself and your services.

Instagram Bio Idea #5: Include Contact Details

If you want your profile to be a one-stop-shop for new visitors, you’ll need to make it easy for them to contact you.

One of the best ways to do that is to switch to an Instagram business profile.

Doing so lets you include your email address, phone number, and WhatsApp without sacrificing any precious character space.

instagram-bio-honey-hi

Additionally, you can include a business or brand category that will appear underneath your name field — so people can know what you do.

Mobile view of Instagram bio profiles: Suitcase, Dante Nicholas

Once that’s all set up, a visitor can easily reach out to you directly via email, a phone call, or be given directions to your location with ease.

Instagram Bio Idea #6: Choose a Relevant Profile Picture

When it comes to social branding, your profile picture is what people recognize most.

If you’re a brand or product-based business, you’ll want to ensure that everyone who lands on your Instagram profile is quickly introduced to who you are.

Think company logo, or a clear shot of a product you’re best known for:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Blume, Refinery 29 Canada, Vacation

On the other hand, if you’re an influencer, creator, or offer a personal service — such as a photographer, or life coach — you might want to use a headshot.

Why? Because “you” are the main part of your brand, and you should introduce yourself to visitors right off the bat.

Faith Broussard Cade , Liana Satenstein , and Lauren Spencer each use an on-brand headshot to keep things clear:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profiles: Faith Broussard Cade, Liana Satenstein, Lauren Spencer

Though it might sound simple, using a headshot or logo helps followers instantly recognize your brand as they scroll Instagram.

TIP: Much like a diamond, clarity is key. Be sure to choose a clear, high-resolution image.

Instagram Bio Idea #7: Tag Related Accounts and a Branded Hashtag

Major “hack” alert: profile usernames and hashtags included in your Instagram bio are clickable links.

Why does this matter?

Because it gives you the ability to promote sister brands, highlight your founder’s Instagram account, or drive traffic to a branded hashtag.

Take a look at how Wan Wan Thai Restauran t uses their Instagram bio to spotlight three sister restaurants, @wayla.nyc , @kimika.nyc , and @lotusandcleaver :

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Wan Wan Thai Restaurant

While Deepica Mutyala and Reels Tips highlight branded hashtags in their bios:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Deepica Mutyala, and Reels Tips

NOTE: Placing hashtags in your Instagram bio doesn’t make your profile discoverable via hashtag search, but a branded hashtag can help you spotlight and collect user-generated content (UGC) .

Instagram Bio Idea #8: Use Instagram Stories Highlights

Instagram Stories Highlights appear directly under your Instagram bio and play as a stand-alone story when someone taps on them.

They’re perfect for sharing valuable information about your brand, spotlighting your community, and showing your personality.

Skincare brand Glow Recipe uses highlights to showcase how its recycling program works, announce new products, and share blog content like their “Boss Babes” series:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Glow Recipe

This provides additional information and value to profile visitors, so it’s a good idea to be strategic in how you set them up.

PRO TIP: To elevate your Instagram Stories Highlights even further, create a set of covers to ensure a consistent look and feel.

Suzanne Spiegoski and Herbivore Botanicals have created cover images and icons that reflect their overall vibe:

Mobile view of Instagram bio profile: Suzanne Spiegoski and Herbivore Botanicals

However you decide to style your Instagram Stories Highlights, a consistent collection can make your bio more appealing and click-worthy.

And that’s it, eight tactics to level-up your Instagram bio to attract your ideal audience, drive traffic, and convert sales.

If you haven't updated your Instagram bio in a while, now’s the perfect time to give it a refresh and turn visitors into followers!

We’re exploring how to:

We will also look at our favorite secret weapon Smart.bio and how it can make your profile pop!

What is an Instagram Bio?

Your Instagram bio is the section on your profile page where you include a brief description  about yourself, your business, your brand, and/or the purpose of your Instagram account. Your bio is  found beneath your Instagram profile name.

This space within your Instagram profile is a very important and exciting opportunity to get more people engaged with your Instagram profile. Within your Instagram bio, there are countless ways in which you can get creative. However, at the most basic level, we generally recommend including  a short description, contact information , hashtags , emojis, and a website URL.

This is a place for you to get creative and show people what they’ll find on your feed. It’s where you can briefly explain who you are and why someone should be following you.

And don’t be afraid to tweak or change the bio! Instagram Bios aren’t set in stone and you can edit them whenever and however you want.

One thing is for certain: for the best Instagram profile possible, you’ll need to keep your bio short and sweet in order to stay under the bio’s 150-character limit.

Our Formula: How to Write an Instagram Bio in 6 Steps

An Instagram bio is what people see first when they visit your page. It’s one of the things that help you grab the audience’s attention, so it needs to stand out!

You have just seconds to leave a great impression and show a person that discovers your profile that it’s worth a follow.

So how do you convince potential people to become followers within the first few seconds after seeing your bio? Check out the six steps from our Instagram bio tips for a refresher!

How to Make Instagram Bio: The Tailwind Edition

Your Instagram bio is where you introduce yourself to people. It’s a place to claim who you are, what your account is about, and why someone should follow you. Think of it like a short and sweet cover letter.

Now, let’s go over how to make your Instagram Bio a killer success.

1. Add keywords and descriptive words into your profile name

You know how the saying goes. What’s in a name?

The opportunity to brand your Instagram bio even more, that’s what!

Technically, you have two names on Instagram that hang above your Instagram bio . One is your Instagram handle, which you choose when you sign up for Instagram and have to change in your Settings. The other is your Instagram profile name!

Check out where the two appear on travel blogger Helen Sula’s Instagram page, where “heleneinbetween” is the handle:

my bio instagram

You have 30 available characters in this line (including emojis!), and it’s a great place to describe what you do, who you are, or what you’re all about.Including relevant keywords and descriptive words in your Instagram bio makes it so much easier for your audience to find you. For example, if you’re a hairstylist, adding your profession “hairstylist” and the city you’re located in your profile name makes it super easy for people looking for a hairstylist in your city to find your Instagram account.

2. Use your bio to quickly convey what followers can expect from your page and what’s in it for them

Did we mention that your Instagram bio has a character limit? That’s why it’s important not to waste this valuable real estate on unnecessary details. For example, there’s no need to restate your name here; instead, focus on providing any details that you didn’t get across in your profile picture and name line!

The Instagram bio is the perfect place to highlight significant details about who you are, what you do, and how you use your Instagram profile in an attention-grabbing way. Your bio is usually the last thing people read before making a decision to follow you OR click on the link in your bio!

Here are a few general details we recommend considering adding into your Instagram bio to get users interested:

To make the most out of your bio space, be sure to use different words (not the same ones as in your name line) to further describe your brand focus or blog content .

After you focus on the message you want to convey with your bio, you’ll want to format it for easy readability and understanding. After all, you have just a few seconds to grab and hold the attention you need to gain a new follower or customer!

Keep reading for some quick tips on how to format your Instagram bio to support your brand and make building a following so much easier!

Should you use hashtags in your Instagram bio?

my bio instagram

We get this question a lot, so we just wanted to clear this up. Whether or not you should use a hashtag in your Instagram bio depends on what you want to portray within the summary of what your Instagram profile is about. You can add hashtags and mentions to your Instagram bio to create a clickable hyperlink.

However, if you include hashtags into your Instagram bio, it doesn’t mean that your profile will automatically appear in that search stream. If you include a hashtag in your Instagram bio, users will be able to click on that hashtag and see all of the posts using that hashtag!

If you’ve created a hashtag specifically for your community or business, it’s a great idea to include it in your Instagram bio so your profile visitors can see it – and it’s also a great spot to collect user-generated content!

Adding a user mention works the same way in your bio (creating a clickable hyperlink), and is a great way to introduce the face or faces behind your brand if you’re hesitant to mix business and personal content. Just link your Instagram handle and add a little clue for curious browsers!

Check out how The Blonde Abroad includes both hashtags and user mentions in her bio.

3. Use line breaks and emojis to make your bio look neat and easy to read!

Nothing turns off readers faster than a thick paragraph of words with no line breaks, spaces or easy-to-follow separators. A block of words might just make your followers’ eyes (and brains!) tired before they even begin.

Not exactly the impression you want to give when you’re looking for buy-in and excitement, right?

You can avoid this by formatting your Instagram bio with line breaks or those handy slashes we mentioned earlier.

Lettering artist Dawn Nicole does this really well in her Instagram bio:

my bio instagram

When you type your Instagram bio, make sure to remove any spaces before and after each sentence that you want to put a line break around. Then hit return. (If you’re on an Apple device, tap the number button in the lower-left corner of your keyboard to find your return button!) This will move the next sentence down to its own line.

You can create full line breaks in between each sentence by adding emojis, slashes or periods.

In fact, you might even consider switching out some words and phrases with relevant emojis to spark some visual interest and create a refreshing reset for your viewer’s eyes!

4. Include a strong call-to-action (CTA) to send your followers somewhere to learn even more about you!

The next element of a perfectly branded Instagram bio is an important one! It’s the next step your followers or visitors should take to learn even more about your product, blog or brand.

Most often, this would be going to your website or another location to view more of your content. That’s why it’s so handy to include a link in your bio by adding in a relevant URL.

Speaking of URLs, did you know that you can add links to your Instagram bio? Here’s how:

Step 1: Log into Instagram

Step 2: Click on your profile photo in the bottom right corner (this brings you to your profile)

Step 3: Press Edit Profile

Step 4: In the space next to Website enter your URL

Step 5: Hit Done

5. Use a link in bio tool to showcase more than one link for ultimate traffic conversion

While you can put a link in your bio directly to your website URL, this isn’t always the most helpful link to use especially if you want to direct followers to a certain page or promotion. That’s why a ton of Instagram users choose a link in bio tool that acts as a landing page for multiple links, including links shared with each post!

10 Instagram Bio Ideas + 13 Tricks to Stand Out [TEMPLATES]

Your Instagram bio gives you 150 characters to explain who you are, what you offer, and why people should follow you.

As far as history goes, we’re living in charmed times — but Shakespeare never had to write an Instagram bio (and let’s face it, the man wasn’t known for being concise). Typing those fateful words into your profile is stressful, and for good reason: your Instagram bio is often the first place other users will look when they’re deciding whether or not to follow you.

Here’s everything you need to know about Instagram bios, and how to write one worthy of a three-act play. Wherefore art thou bio?

Bonus: Unlock 28 inspiring social media bio templates to create your own in seconds and stand out from the crowd.

What is an Instagram bio?

A bio on Instagram is a description of your account that can be up to 150 characters long and sits at the very top of your profile page, next to your profile picture. It’s a snapshot of your Instagram account and a quick way to show users who you are and what you’re about.

Because of the limited character count, an Instagram bio needs to be concise, easy to read and informative… but don’t be afraid to have fun with it. Emojis and jokes are fair game, even for professionals using the platform. After reading your bio, people should understand what you do and why they should follow you.

What makes a good bio for Instagram?

A good Instagram bio is a bio that users can’t resist interacting with, whether it’s by slamming that “follow” button, scrolling through (and liking and commenting on) your content, watching your story highlights or sending your Instagram profile to friends. The best Instagram bios are short and sweet, and genuinely convey your personality as a creator or brand.

For more details, watch our video on making the PERFECT Instagram bio:

When you’re dreaming up your bio, try asking yourself these questions — especially if you’re using Instagram for business :

On that last point: All good marketing materials should include a clear and compelling call to action . Good Insta bios are no exception. Give visitors clear direction if you want them to click the link in your bio, follow your account or take a different specific action.

You might want to add a link to your bio to send people to a page where they can buy your products, or you might have a different conversion goal in mind. Maybe you want people to Like your Facebook page , follow you on TikTok or sign up for your newsletter.

If your goal is to build an Instagram following , your call to action might be simply to ask visitors to press that follow button, or to share their photos with a branded hashtag .

10 Instagram bio ideas

If you’re feeling a little stuck, no fear — there are literally 1.22 billion Instagram users you can get inspiration from. Here are a few bio ideas for Instagram to get you started.

1. Funny Instagram bios

Unfortunately, there’s nothing less funny than trying to be funny. The key to a comedic Instagram bio is keeping honest, like this one from a drink brand.

Innocent Instagram bio

Source: @innocent

Playing to your audience — and embracing how they see your brand — is another way to get laughs.

Bugles Instagram Bio

And when all else fails, being quippy and somewhat vague is also a good source of comedy. If chaos is your brand, embrace it.

2. Instagram bio quotes

Using Instagram bio quotes can be a great way to express an idea or create a feeling of connection.

You could use a saying, a line from a poem or song, or any phrase that will mean something to potential followers. Just make sure to give credit where credit is due if you use someone else’s words.

The Quotations Page is a good place to start your search for good Instagram bio quotes.

Here are 15 quote ideas you can copy and paste directly into your Instagram bio.

3. Creative Instagram bios

A bio may only be 150 characters, but that’s more than enough to stretch that creative muscle. During the launch of Netflix’s Heartstopper , the company changed their bio to an invite for the main actors to start a band.

Netflix Instagram Bio

This bio from Crocs is so creative, it takes a second to understand — we’ll let you read it before spoiling.

Crocs Instagram Bio

Source: @crocs

Did you get it? It’s “If you ain’t Croc-ing, you ain’t rocking.”

If you can’t make up your mind, do it all. Insta-famous Italian greyhound Tika has emojis, a quote from Lizzo, “Fashion Model” and “Gay Icon” status, and a link to her book in her bio. Impressive (but not as impressive as a dog writing a book).

Tika the iggy instagram bio

4. Cool Instagram bios

“All your friends are so cool, you go out every night” — Olivia Rodrigo. Who is pretty cool herself: this short, informative and rhyming bio says it all.

Olivia Rodrigo Instagram Bio

Source: @oliviarodrigo

Another way to up the cool factor: commit an ultimate branding faux pas and don’t introduce yourself in an easily identifiable way. For example, most folks would identify Serena Williams as a tennis superstar. In her Instagram bio, she’s simply “Olympia’s mom.” It feels very true to her, and that’s cool.

Serena Williams Instagram Bio

Source: @serenawilliams

There’s a pattern here — ”cool” and “short” go hand-in-hand. If you want a cool bio for Instagram, being too wordy won’t help. If that’s what you’re going for, try and be as concise as possible. Like Lizzo.

Lizzo Instagram Bio

5. Short Instagram bios

Speaking of short — if you don’t need 150 characters, don’t use them. Dating app Bumble’s bio simply prompts folks to make the first move.

Bumble Instagram bio

Source: @bumble

Fewer words makes the words you do use more powerful, and really makes a statement.

Bob the Drag Queen Instagram Bio

Or, you can go in a totally opposite direction and write a short bio that few, if any, will understand. You do you.

Kirsten Titus Instagram Bio

6. Clever Instagram bios

A clever Instagram bio will score a chuckle (and hopefully a follow) from users. Stay self aware and lighthearted, and the cleverness will come. Old Spice’s bio is a play on the bizarre masculinity that’s present in men’s deodorant branding.

Old Spice Instagram Bio

Tiffany Haddish hypes herself, but stays humble in her Instagram bio.

And sometimes, the cleverest route is the simplest: in a world of people trying to be as cool as possible, artist Allie Brosh just tells it like it is, and really stands out.

Allie Brosh Instagram Bio

7. Instagram bios with emojis

Emojis are like cheating (the good kind). When words fail, emojis are there. Designers Josh and Matt describe their relationship, career, home base and pets all in a single line of emojis.

Josh and Matt Design Instagram bio

You can also use emojis like bullet points for a super-aesthetic look.

Olive and Bean Instagram Bio

Or, go with the classic (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) and substitute emojis for the words they represent — hearts for love, etc.

Pickle the Pig Instagram Bio

8. Instagram business bios

If you’re using Instagram for business, a bio can be a great place to introduce yourself (more and more folks are using social media to research brands ). Kraft peanut butter has a great example of a succinct bio that describes their company.

Kraft Peanut Butter Instagram Bio

Source: @kraftpeanutbutter_ca

Businesses can also use their bio to describe their brand ethos, and what makes them different from others in the industry.

Ocin Instagram Bio

Source: @ocin

If you’re doing affiliate marketing or partnering with other businesses, a bio is a good place to put discount codes or promotions related to those affiliations.

Phillychinchilly Instagram Bio

9. Instagram bios with links

Your link in bio is a rich place for users to gain more resources and information about your brand. Make sure your audience sees it by pointing to it. Yeah, we mean literally. Clothing brand Free Label uses their bio to identify what the link is (in this case, a path to their latest launch).

Source: @free.label

In a similar fashion, artist Zoe Si uses her bio to point to her latest book, which is accessible through her link in bio.

Zoe Si Instagram Bio

10. Informative Instagram bios

Sometimes, you just want the facts. Having the answer to your most frequently asked questions — in the example below, that’s probably “When are you open?” — can pay off. It might not be fun, but it’s simple and clear.

13 Instagram bio tricks you may not know about

Hungry for more? We got you. Here are some tips to make sure you have the best bio for Instagram.

1. Use fancy Instagram bio fonts

Technically, you can only use one “font” in your Instagram bio. But there are tools out there that will help you create the look of a custom font by mapping your text to existing special characters.

Here’s an example of what Hootsuite writer Christine’s bio looks like in a few different fonts, as created using the tool Instagram Fonts .

Instagram bio fonts

That third one is a little bonkers, but you could pick and choose a few words to incorporate strategically for visual appeal. In general, it’s a good idea to use this trick sparingly, for emphasis, rather than dressing your entire bio up in fancy fonts.

Once you find a font style you like, just copy and paste it into your Instagram bio.

2. Use Instagram bio symbols

We’ve already talked about using emojis. But you can also go old-school and use special text symbols to break ★ up ★ your ★ bio. (Remember Wingdings and Webdings? How very 1990s.)

This trick uses the same principle as the tip above, but instead of using symbols to create the look of a custom font, you can use them as retro emojis or unique bullet points:

Blogger unique bullet points

Source: @blogger

The easiest way to find your special character is to open a new Google Doc, then click Insert and choose Special characters.

Insert special characters

You can scroll through the available options, search by keyword, or even draw a shape to find a similar character. Then, just copy and paste into your Instagram bio.

3. Add a location

This is particularly useful for businesses: customers will want to know who (and where) they’re buying from. Marking your location can also help your brand be more searchable.

When you add your address to your Instagram business profile, it also appears below your bio but does not use up any of your bio character count. This is another great way to free up space for more compelling bio information. Be warned, your address only shows up on mobile.

Pourhouse Instagram Bio

Source: @pourhouse

4. Add contact buttons

Business profiles can include contact information in the form of buttons that allow people to phone you, email you, or get directions to your business directly from Instagram. This is another one that only shows up on mobile.

Midnight Paloma Instagram Bio

Source: @midnightpaloma

5. Add a call to action button

Another mobile-only feature: You can encourage people to take action straight from your Instagram bio with CTA buttons. These allow your followers to take direct actions like ordering food from your restaurant, or buying tickets for your event.

Maenam Instagram Bio

Source: @maenamrestaurant

You’ll find these options under Action Buttons when editing your business profile.

6. Add a link in bio

You get one clickable link in your Instagram bio. Since you can’t use clickable links in Instagram feed posts (unless you’re using Instagram ads or Instagram Shopping ), your bio link is valuable real estate.

You can change the URL as often as you like. You might want to link to your newest or most important content (like your latest blog post or video), a special campaign, or a landing page specifically for visitors coming from Instagram .

You can also use Instagram tools like Linktree to set up a mobile landing page with multiple links. That way, you don’t have to keep updating the link in your Instagram bio, which can lead to outdated “link in bio” statements on older posts.

7. Use your bio to direct traffic to another platform or website

If your primary social media is on a different platform and you consider Instagram a necessary evil, that’s okay — you can use your bio as a way to direct other users to that platform.

Comedian Ziwe Fumudoh rarely posts on Instagram, but is very active on TikTok, so she uses her bio to steer audiences towards that app.

Ziwe Instagram Bio

Lush, weirdly, “departed” from social media but still has an active Instagram and uses their link in bio to explain why they’re not online.

Lush Cosmetics Instagram Bios

Source: @lushcosmetics

8. Use line breaks

People don’t tend to read information online. Instead, they scan for bite-sized chunks of information.

Make that information easy to identify using line breaks.

Okoko Cosmetiques uses a combination of emojis and line breaks to create this cute Instagram bio:

Okoko Cosmetiques Instagram Bio

Source: @okokocosmetiques

It’s really easy to add line breaks using the Instagram web interface. Simply space your bio as you would like it to appear.

On mobile, your best bet is to create your bio with the spacing you want using a notes app. Then, copy and paste it into your Instagram bio field. Or, use one of the Instagram bio templates below.

9. Share your pronouns

If you want to, it’s great to share your pronouns on Instagram. Since the option was first added in May 2021 , it’s become customary on the app to add your pronouns to your bio, whether you’re cisgender, transgender or nonbinary. Displaying your pronouns means your followers will know how to properly address you, and normalizing the practice helps make everyone feels more comfortable on the platform.

10. Use Hashtags

Hashtags in your Instagram bio are clickable links. Keep in mind, though, that Instagram bios do not appear in hashtag search results. Adding Instagram hashtags to your bio won’t make it more discoverable.

That means you should not include hashtags unless they are directly related to your business, because each one represents an opportunity for potential followers to click away.

However, adding a branded hashtag to your bio is a great way to promote and collect user-generated content.

This is one of the best ways for businesses to use hashtags in their bio. When a user clicks on the hashtag, they will see all the content your fans and followers have posted, which creates excellent social proof for your business .

Branded hashtags are also a great way to get more content: you can reshare follower’s posts that use the hashtag. In fact, some users build their entire following off of user-submitted posts.

11. Use your bio to link to other accounts

If you have a personal and a business account, or you’re involved in a cool project that has its own handle, you can tag that account in your bio. This can help people identify you (Oh, THAT’S where I know Zendaya from) but be careful using them, as they may encourage audiences to navigate away from your page. (This is something Zendaya likely does not care about).

12. Add a category

If you have a business profile on Instagram , you can choose a category for your business. This appears under your name and can help people see what you do at a glance.

Elmo Instagram Bio

Source: @elmo

Elmo, for example, is a public figure.

Using a category for your business can free up space in your Instagram bio, since you don’t need to repeat this information. However, it only appears in the mobile view, so you can’t assume everyone will see it.

13. Announce news

As long as you remember to update your bio regularly, you can use it to announce news about new products and updates for your brand. If you’re going to put a date in your bio, though, mark your calendar or set a reminder to change it. If you have an old date in your bio, it makes your account look like it’s not being monitored closely.

After Mexican pizza made its triumphant return, Taco Bell updated this bio.

220+ Instagram Bio Ideas to Make Your Own in 2023

Werner Geyser

Your Instagram bio is one of the first things people will notice when they go to your profile. They will make assumptions and judgements about what kind of person you are or brand you have based on what they see there. This makes it crucial to write powerful bios that will instantly impress your audience and gain more followers .

In this post, you’ll discover some excellent Instagram bio ideas as well as a few tips to help you write better, more impressive bios in 2023.

Funny, Self-Descriptive Instagram Bios

Clever and snarky instagram bios, business instagram bios, short and simple instagram bios, inspirational/motivational instagram bios, cute instagram bios, instagram bios that exude confidence, quotes by famous people, frequently asked questions, what makes a good instagram bio in 2023.

Before we provide you with Instagram bios you can copy and paste, you need to first understand what makes a good Instagram bio. This will help you learn how to improve on these ideas and create original bios of your own.

Instagram Bio Tip

We’ve convinced you why your Instagram bio remains one of the most important elements. We’ve also given you tools to help you make the most of your link. If you’re short on inspiration and searching for ideas to get you started, there are many examples of good Instagram bios available online that you can make your own. Whether you want to keep it clever or cute, there are various approaches that you can take.

So what makes a good Instagram bio? The answer is subjective, but it could contain any of the following elements or more:

#1: Informative

An Instagram bio that clearly describes what the user does or what they’re interested in can be considered a good bio. You could list your job profile, interests, accomplishments, and hobbies. For example, your bio could be something like, “fitness enthusiast + dog mom + founder of X Company.”

If you’re an influencer, you could also include other essential information such as your brand collaborations, upcoming events you’re participating in, latest merch you’re promoting, etc.

Take a look at the bio of the following DIY and baking influencer, for example.

Meg Rosko Instagram page

She’s listed what she does and includes some information about her t each classes on how to step into creative expressions.

Witty bios tend to be among the most successful and appreciated types of Instagram bios. Showing how clever you are without being offensive is a great way to impress people.

However, it’s best to maintain originality if you want to do this because people may not always appreciate recycled wit. Using puns, clever quotes, word play, etc. would be an excellent way to create a witty bio.

Trevor Noah used the popular outrage about him not being cast in, “The Lion King,” to come up with a witty bio.

#3: Humorous

Humour always works to impress an Instagram audience . The lines between wit and humour often merge, so you may find bios that combine the two to leave a lasting impression. Think of an interesting fact about yourself and find a way to describe it in a humorous way. Even if you can’t come up with an original joke, you can always use one of the ideas in this post.

Musician Diplo took an underrated and hilarious approach to writing his Instagram bio and simply described himself as an “Instagram model with a self-titled album”

@diplo Instagram photos and videos

#4: Compelling

Some Instagram bios are more compelling than funny, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less great.

You could be an entrepreneur or someone who wants to present themselves in a more professional manner. In this case, a compelling or inspirational bio would do the trick. You could write an inspirational quote or even a message that sells your expertise without being overly promotional.

Take a look at Brett Hoebel’s bio, for instance.

Brett Hoebel (@bretthoebel) Instagram page

The athlete and fitness trainer uses a simple but compelling message in his bio to sell his service. His product's name is Sweat With Soul Apparel, which is not exactly a message to the customer, but a subliminal message that will give his followers an idea what to expect from his sessions and motivates them to succeed.

#5: Easy to Read

You could take any of these approaches to creating your Instagram bio. The best choice would be something that expresses your personality. But no matter which approach you take, your Instagram bio should be very easy to read. People who view your profile should be able to instantly understand what you do or who you are. You want to make sure they don’t miss any detail in your bio.

So keeping it short and simple is usually the best way to go about it. Otherwise, you could use bulleted lists to include more information while ensuring readability. You can separate your lists with “+” signs or other symbols so that there’s some space between each word. You could even include emojis in your bio to add more substance.

Here’s a great example from Roger Mazzeo.

There are tons of ideas here that you can use as they are or customize them to make them more “you.” You can combine them with some of your personal information such as your achievements, job roles, etc. You could even keep it simple and use a short bio along with a link to your website or blog. Make the most of these ideas to impress your audience and gain more followers.

What makes a good Instagram bio?

In this post, we looked at more than 220 ideas that can help you improve your Instagram bio. Your Instagram bio is one of the first things people will notice when they go to your profile, so don’t underestimate its importance. What makes a good Instagram bio? The answer is subjective, but it could contain any of the following elements: Informative Witty Humorous Compelling Easy to read

How do you make a good Instagram profile?

Begin by setting up an Instagram business profile. You don’t need to be a business for this, but it gives you more opportunities, for example, showing contacts and access to your analytics. Select a profile pic that genuinely represents you – it doesn’t have to be your photo, but it must encapsulate you. Use memorable user and Instagram names that represent the “you” you want people to know. Then follow the bio tips we have provided in this article. Add relevant contact options.

How do I make my Instagram profile more attractive?

In terms of the content of your bio, follow the tips in this article. If you are a business or have a clear brand, use your existing color palette and fonts (or at least the nearest you can find in an Instagram font generator) on your Instagram profile. Explore other Instagram profiles for inspiration. If you don’t already have set colors, experiment with colors to find what best suits you. Consider using a consistent set of filters for the images you upload.

What is an Instagram avatar?

An Instagram avatar is the image you choose to use as your profile picture. Don’t underestimate the power of your avatar – it is often people’s first impression of you. Generally, use a photograph, even if a business account, unless you are an already recognized brand. Ideally, use an image of your face. Make sure you have a neutral background that doesn’t divert the eye. Although you may not see much of your clothing, wear something appropriate for the types of images you intend to share.

How do I show my birthday on Instagram?

Many people began their Instagram account by linking to their Facebook account. In that case, your birthday will auto migrate from Facebook to Instagram. If it is incorrect, you can change it on Facebook, and it will automatically update on Instagram. Alternatively, you can change it in Instagram directly: 1. Go to your profile. 2. Tap Edit Profile. 3. Tap Personal Information. 4. Tap Birthday and enter your date of birth. Instagram states that it doesn’t share your birthday with other people.

Should I use my real name on Instagram?

To an extent, this depends on your purpose for having an Instagram account. It also depends on how common a name you have. There is no compulsion to use your real name – many people select something different as their username. Many people pick a username similar to their real name, however. The most important thing is that you don’t deliberately impersonate another person on Instagram. If you haven’t made your username your real name, you could show it in your profile bio.

How to craft an impactful Instagram bio for business (+ examples)

Written by by Chloe West

Published on  January 4, 2023

Reading time  8 minutes

While your Instagram content might be what draws someone over to your profile initially, your Instagram bio is one of the major components that will keep them there—and maybe even earn your brand a follow.

Think about this: if you like a photo or video on Instagram and then go to the profile and their bio is completely blank (or lacks vital information) you’re going to immediately lose interest or think the account is a fake and leave. No follow and no looking back.

Others do the same, so it’s important to fully optimize your Instagram strategy —bio and all.

Table of Contents

What is an Instagram bio?

Why an instagram business bio matters, what to put in an instagram bio, tips for writing the best instagram bios for business (+ examples), create a compelling instagram bio for your business.

An Instagram bio is a description of your business that sits at the top of your Instagram profile. It can only be up to 150 characters, so you want to be concise, sharing what your business does and who it serves in as few words as possible.

Take a look at our own Instagram bio to get an idea of what this might look like:

An Instagram bio example from Sprout Social

We’ll get into each of these more thoroughly later, but our full bio includes:

There are a few more things you can consider including within your own bio to further share what your business does.

First of all, why does your Instagram business profile bio matter so much? As simple as it may seem, an Instagram bio plays a critical role in establishing your brand presence. It shows people who you are and what you sell. You can also use the same space to tell them why they should care about your business and its offering.

In many cases, your Instagram profile may be the first point of contact whether someone finds you through an Instagram hashtag or by clicking through from a paid post or sharing on Stories. Your bio is an important first impression while clarifying why they should follow you.

That’s why you should focus on creating an Instagram business bio that effectively portrays your brand personality and establishes your unique value proposition. In other words, it should factor into your overall  Instagram business strategy .

Writing your Instagram bio for business is one key part of  creating the perfect Instagram business profile . Here are the essential elements that go into your Instagram bio:

1. Name and username

Your Instagram username is your @handle and your Instagram identity. It’s a part of your Instagram profile URL (instagram.com/myusername) and holds a prominent location at the top of your profile page.

On the other hand, your name is your real or full brand name. Depending on data sources like audience and  keyword research , you may know of abbreviations or name variations commonly used for your brand name. You might consider using those in one spot in your Instagram bio, such as in your username.

For instance, in the following Instagram business profile example, the username for Sprouts Farmers Market is just @sprouts but the name section has the full name of the business.

An Instagram bio example from Sprout's Farmers Market

2. Profile photo and branding

This should be relevant to your  brand’s visual identity . Best practices dictate that you should use a high-res image of your logo in order to improve brand recognition and keep all of your social media profiles on brand. However, solopreneurs and public figures often use headshots, and that’s a perfectly acceptable alternative.

For brands with a widely-recognized visual identity like National Geographic TV, the iconic yellow rectangle logo makes for a great profile photo.

An Instagram bio example from National Geographic

Another way to brand your Instagram profile is through your Instagram highlight covers . While not necessarily a part of your bio, these still show up at the top of your profile and give you an opportunity to inject even more color into your Instagram.

An Instagram bio example from Bliss

3. Instagram bio copy

This is the section under your name, where you get to express yourself (or in this case, your brand personality). You have 150 characters to tell people what your Instagram profile is about, what your brand offers and why they should follow you. So you don’t have much to work with, which makes it even more crucial to plan ahead and perfect your Instagram business bio.

Here’s an example of great bio copy from BarkBox. They start with a simple sentence that explains exactly what their business does. They tag their parent company. Then they even include a couple of hashtags that BarkBox customers can use when showing off their boxes.

An Instagram bio example from BarkBox

4. Bio link

This is the only section that allows you to add a clickable link on Instagram to your website, so make sure you use this space wisely. While you can always add a URL to your homepage, you can also update this link more frequently by posting new products, new content, new projects and more.

Many brands use a link-in-bio tool  to maximize the single link limit by taking the user to a landing page with shortcuts to featured content and product pages.

An Instagram bio example from Away

5. Category

Instagram also allows you to specify which category your brand falls under—whether you run a restaurant or a media and entertainment company. This shows up right under your business name if you choose to enable it, so it helps free up space in your Instagram bio for other important details.

As we can see below, Bloomscape has selected “Patio/Garden” as their brand category.

An Instagram bio example from Bloomscape

6. Call-to-action and contact buttons

You could further free up space in your Instagram bio if you make the most of the call-to-action buttons available for Instagram Business accounts. This allows people to take action straight from your Instagram profile when on the mobile app, making it easier for customers to convert on actions—from buying tickets to booking tables.

Keep in mind that these are only accessible on the mobile app, and they’ll look something like the “View Shop,” “Message,” and “Call” buttons below:

An Instagram bio example from Elemis

Now that you know what goes into an Instagram bio, let’s take a look at tips on how to write the best Instagram bios for business.

1. Know what your goal is

Since you have to stay within the 150-character limit, it’s crucial that you have a clear sense of direction when writing your Instagram bio. Knowing exactly what you want out of your bio will help you narrow down what to say.

For instance, you could simply use it to convey your brand’s personality and announce your Instagram presence. You could also use it to promote your latest products and offers or inform people about what your business does. If you do promote sales and recent products, be sure your team is ready to regularly refresh your Instagram bio and ensure this info is up to date.

Some businesses also use this section to express their  brand mission and what they stand for. Check out the following Instagram business profile example from Grove Collaborative. The company’s bio tells us a little bit about what the business sells and what its overall mission is.

An Instagram bio example from Grove Collaborative

Here’s another great example of a basic bio that’s straightforward and explains exactly what the company (Slack in this instance) does:

An Instagram bio example from Slack

2. Let your brand personality shine through

Make the most of your Instagram business bio to express your brand personality. This includes the language and tone you use or what you say, in general. For instance, Reese’s uses a fun and friendly tone in its bio while using the opportunity to establish its brand authority.

An Instagram bio example from Reese's

Some businesses may also add relevant emojis if that kind of approach fits the brand personality. But note that special characters and emojis may not translate well on a screen reader. Be sure to keep  accessibility best practices  in mind for all your followers and avoid filling your entire bio with characters that are hard to read or understand for customers using screen readers.

3. Include relevant hashtags and profile links

Instagram lets you add clickable hashtags and profile links in your bio. So make the most of this to direct customers to your other Instagram handles or to relevant, tagged content.

The option to add profile links is great for businesses that  manage multiple accounts . See how Madewell added a link to their Instagram account for menswear.

An Instagram bio example from Madewell

Brands can also take a page out of Weezie’s book, tagging the accounts of their founders as well as their brick-and-mortar store (ideal when you have two different social media strategies for your retail versus ecommerce avenues).

An Instagram bio example from Weezie Towels

As for hashtags, adding them to your bio will let you direct your audience to stunning tagged user-generated content. You could use a branded hashtag to collect user-generated content like Cupshe. The swimsuit brand included several hashtags they track for content to feature on their own account.

An Instagram bio example from Cupshe

4. Make sure it’s easy to read

As mentioned earlier, your Instagram bio should be able to convey what your business does or what it offers. So it’s crucial that people can easily read and process the information without too much trouble. Formatting such as line breaks and spacing makes it easier to read and emphasize important information at a glance.

You could use a pipe or vertical bar character to space out your info like in the following Instagram business profile example from Leder Games. They used the symbol to separate their most popular game offerings.

An Instagram bio example from Leder Games

You could also use line breaks to style your info in a list format. See how this bio skillfully uses lists, incorporating emojis as a kind of bullet point.

An Instagram bio example from Kundalini Candles

Keep in mind that these characters and line breaks will factor into your total character count. So make sure you use them sparingly and strategically to avoid going over the character limit. You could also test different formatting to see how they impact your overall profile engagement. Use a tool like  Sprout Social’s Instagram analytics suite  to measure how your profile engagement changes as you update.

sprout social social media analytics dashboard

5. Include a compelling call to action

While the call-to-action buttons frees up a lot of space in your bio, it doesn’t hurt to get more direct with your CTA. Make sure people know exactly what they need to do when they visit your profile by including a CTA in your bio.

Get very specific with this depending on the goal of your Instagram business account. You could invite them to visit your website, shop your feed, check out your latest blog post, download your new guide or even share their own photos using your branded hashtag. If you want to  grow your Instagram following , you could even add a CTA to “follow us” for your regular content such as daily recipes, fashion updates and so on.

For example, Ahrefs uses their bio text to create a CTA that points (literally, thanks to their use of emoji) to their latest feature release.

Where Is Bio in Instagram?

my bio instagram

So you’ve come across the oft-quoted “Link in Bio” on someone’s Instagram post and are wondering how to get there. Or you’re starting out as an Instagram influencer and are wondering how to get to your bio so you too can redirect people to your own website. Promoting your business and creative work may seem like a lot of work, but in reality, it is much easier than most people think.

Instagram bio is the space where users describe themselves to the world, add hashtags and other accounts that they associate with, and add a link to their website. But where is this “bio” section and why would you want to promote yourself as such? We’ll explain.

Find someone else’s bio (and a link in their bio)

Find your own bio, instagram bio link uses, adding multiple links using link services, how to put pronouns in instagram bio, where is bio in instagram.

Instagram isn’t just a place for idle scrolling, viewing pictures and videos, and texting friends. Just like businesses and publishers, you too can turn your followers into potential customers, or just give your work that extra bit of reach.

Whenever you see “link in bio” in someone’s post caption, you can be sure that they’re inviting you to check out their complete catalog. Unsure how to get to the bio section? Here’s how you can…

To get to someone else’s bio, simply tap on their username just above their post.

Doing so will take you to their profile where, under their profile picture, you will see the “bio” section.

Here, you will see their account descriptions and the blue links . Clicking on this will redirect you to their website or a page outside of Instagram.

To get to your own bio, tap on your profile icon (at the bottom right corner of the screen).

This will take you to your profile. The bio section is under your profile picture and name.

When it comes to adding links to your bio, Instagram is quite restrictive. Users can only add one link to their bio at a time. Why? Essentially, to curtail spammers and trolls from flooding the feed with links and ruining the users’ experience.

But even with a single embedded link, there are tons of things that you can accomplish with your bio.

1. Promoting your product or brand : With a 150-character limitation, the bio section isn’t really the place to sing praises of your brand or cause. It is best to link to your page so that people can check out your products themselves.

2. Offer free product samples and sale discounts : Whether it be to attract people for the launch of a new product or to boost sales, discounts and free offerings are marketing schemes that are almost certain to persuade people to notice your products. Linking to these in your bio is a nice “call to action” that will attract customers and audiences.

3. Invite people to see your artistic catalog : If you’re an artist with material published, then it is a great idea to link to where people can access it. It could be a blog, a podcast, a song, or your YouTube channel. As long as people are redirected directly to your content, the link has done its job.

4. Let your followers know you better : There’s only so much that one can write in a bio, and brevity isn’t everyone’s strong suit. Your link could redirect your followers to a page that describes you best in your own words, your interests, passions, pursuits, and accomplishments. This is best done if you want your followers to get to know you better and connect on a deeper level.

How to link in bio Instagram

Adding links to your Instagram bio is quite the cinch. Here’s how you can do so:

Go to your profile page (as shown before), and tap on  Edit Profile .

Here, in the “Website” section, add a brief link to your website or page that you want users to be redirected to.

Then tap on the tick mark at the top right corner to confirm.

Consider this your main link for people who are going to visit your profile. It is best not to change this too many times, not least to ensure that someone accessing your profile in the future can get to the link that you’ve related to in one of your earlier posts. If you want to include links that are only meant for a few days, add them to your stories.

Although Instagram allows only a single link to be added to the bio, you can make use of link services to add multiple links into one. Some of these link services include the likes of Linktree , smartURL , ContactInBio , and Campsite .

Such services are quite intuitive to use and work more or less similarly – sign up to the service, add links to your pages, and create a single link out of them. Now, embed this newly created link to your bio’s “website” section. Most of these can also be customized to reflect the theme of your Instagram page, which is a nice little feature to have.

For example, the user “ martyfriedman ” has used smartURL for his bio.

Clicking on it takes one to a list of all the links embedded with this link service.

In keeping with progressive principles, Instagram is rolling out a new feature that will allow users to specify the pronouns that they prefer to be identified with. Keep in mind that this feature is currently only available in a few countries, but Instagram has planned to introduce this feature to users in more countries in the future.

Here’s how you can check if the feature is available to you and add the pronouns to your Instagram bio:

Tap on your profile at the bottom right corner.

Tap on Edit profile .

Here, if you see a section called “Pronouns”, tap on it.

On the next page, tap on the “Add your Pronouns” section, type in a pronoun, and select it from the list.

You can add up to 4 pronouns to your profile. Below it, you also have the option to allow only your followers to see your list of pronouns.

Once you’re done, tap on the tick mark at the top right corner.

We hope you’ve been able to find the bio section and add the link(s) to your businesses and content. These are sure to get you better reach for your work and allow your followers to understand you better.

What Does “Link in Bio” Mean on Social Media?

Instagram on a smartphone.

If you’re an Instagram user, you may have seen someone on the platform refer to their “link in bio” in a video or image post. Here’s what that is and where you can find it.

“Link in Bio?”

The link in bio is the single link in the upper section of an Instagram account user’s profile, which is located just beneath their username and profile description.

To find an Instagram user’s link in bio, navigate to their profile page. The link in bio will be immediately visible, as it is situated above the “Follow” or “Following” button. Clicking on the link in bio will either redirect you to your device’s browser or open up the in-app browser on Instagram.

Why Link in Bio?

The emergence of the “link in bio” as a prominent part of social media usage came about because of Instagram’s user interface. Many brands, celebrities, and content creators use Instagram to promote their newest products, creations, or advertisements. However, Instagram does not allow for clickable links to be placed in post captions, and it allows for only a single link in one’s profile.

Therefore, that single link on a user’s account profile has become the center of Instagram’s business aspect. It is the most prominent way that a user can redirect their followers off of Instagram and onto another website.

Because of this, you will constantly hear the phrase “link in bio” spoken out loud in Instagram videos and placed in the captions of image posts. For example, a gaming studio might write out, “Our new expansion is out now! Click the link in bio to download,” with the link leading the user to the game’s download page.

Another app where “link in bio” is commonplace is TikTok . Like Instagram, it only allows for a single primary link in a profile and does not allow users to place links in the captions for videos. Therefore, users have to encourage their viewers to check the “link in bio” instead. There are also links in Twitter profiles. However, link in bio is less prominent there, since the platform allows for links in tweets.

What Kinds of Links?

There are a few types of links that appear in an influencer or personality’s Instagram bio. Here are some of the most common ones:

Because you can use the link in bio to promote anything that fits inside Instagram’s community guidelines, many other types of links are added into bios. Other examples include an artist page on a music streaming service , an online portfolio, a demo reel, or a personal website. Some people even place their Venmo or PayPal account into their bios.

The “Link in Bio” Industry

Because of the rise of “link in bio” placements, an increasing number of tools have emerged to allow users to use a “universal link” in which to place various links. Popular link-in-bio tools include Linktree , Shorby , and Feedlink .

Essentially, what these links do is direct you to a landing page that contains various important links. This lets people place various social media profile links, sponsorship placements, and affiliate links inside a single page. This is very common for corporate accounts and major celebrities, as they need to direct their viewers to different links in every post.

Cool Story, Bro

One last thing: On Instagram, the restriction on links does not apply to Instagram stories . Therefore, sponsorships and brand promotions are increasingly emerging on stories, which let users “swipe up” to go to a link.

Before we get into how to make the best Instagram bio , let’s take a look at the elements that make up this part of your profile.

1. Profile photo

Your profile photo is one of the first things people will notice in your Instagram bio. Make sure you use a photo that:

my bio instagram

A business’s logo is often perfect for their profile picture. Keep in mind the minimum profile picture size is 110 x 110 pixels. Stay below 200 x 200 so visitors don’t see a stretched or blurry photo when visiting your profile.

2. Username and display name

Your username or handle is one of the most important aspects of your Instagram bio. It’s located at the top of the bio, and determines how people search for your brand. Use your business name if possible. If it’s already taken, make sure that the first part of your username includes your brand name, then add a small detail about your business to make your handle unique (e.g. @yourbrand_us, @yourbrand_men).

You can also add a display name, which will appear below the username and photo in your Instagram profile. Use this field to write out the full name of your business, complete with capital letters and spaces.

3. Description

Your profile description is the core of your Instagram bio. Here’s where you have the opportunity to showcase your brand, sum up your mission and products, and encourage customers to take action. Keep in mind you’re limited to 150 characters (that’s less than a tweet), so keep your description as simple and straightforward as possible.

4. Clickable URL

Only one clickable link is available within the bio of your Instagram profile. Here you can add a link for followers to visit your website, a Messenger bot, a specific campaign, or anywhere you want to drive traffic.

Since the vast majority of Instagram users are on smartphones, it’s important to make sure your bio link is optimized for mobile devices. Shopify’s free Linkpop “link in bio” tool allows you to create a custom URL, connecting your Instagram followers to a mobile-friendly, curated page of important links like your online store, content, products and more.

5. Business category

The Instagram Category section shows up under your business name and is generated by the category you’ve chosen on a linked Facebook page. (To choose a business category, log into Facebook and click the “Edit page info” button under your About section.) Choosing your business category will give visitors a better, immediate idea of the products you offer.

6. Call-to-action buttons

Call-to-action (CTA) buttons are a huge part of a good Instagram bio. When people visit your profile, you may want to give them an easy way to contact your business. You can add a few different action buttons depending on your business type:

7. Story Highlights

Story Highlights are groups of Stories you can present as clickable thumbnails on your Instagram profile. Once you post a Story, you can save it to Highlights that will display in your bio. You can also save Stories in an archive and use them for future Highlights.

How to create the best bio for Instagram

Since you only have a limited number of characters at your disposal, there are a handful of objectives you need to prioritize in your bio before you start optimizing the rest of your profile.

1. Tell profile visitors who you are and why they should care

However you choose to express it, the first thing your bio needs to accomplish is explaining what your business offers and who you serve.

When new users discover you on Instagram, you need to quickly give them the info they need to stay interested. As on most social media platforms, you won’t have a user’s attention for long, so use concise copy that gets your point across quickly.

For many brands, such as Knix in the example below, that means explicitly spelling out who they are in clear and simple terms.

Knixwear Instagram Bio

Your bio doesn’t need to rely solely on text. You can make it stand out by using:

2. Use clickable tags to promote branded hashtags and sister accounts

The link in your bio isn’t the only thing visitors can click on to learn more about you. If you have a branded Instagram hashtag , include it in your bio to draw clicks and take interested users to an Instagram feed of branded or user-generated content. Just type it in your bio as you would any hashtag.

Pura Vida Bracelets , for example, uses a clickable tag in its bio to promote the branded hashtag #PuraVidaBracelets.

This actively encourages customers to create a new post, use the branded hashtag in their Instagram captions , and share photos of themselves wearing their bracelets. Branded hashtags are also searchable, which provides a variety of benefits, such as:

Similarly, you can tag other Instagram accounts to direct profile visitors to your additional properties. If you have a sub-brand with a separate account or a partnership you want to highlight, you can mention it in your bio (i.e., “@username”) and it will appear as a link.

Fashion Nova is a fantastic example of a brand that uses mention tagging well in its bio. It has separate Instagram profiles for its men’s and plus-size sub-brands.

By tagging these Instagram accounts in its main profile, Fashion Nova ensures it sends users to the accounts with the content and products best suited to them.

3. Include a call to action

Featuring a call to action in your bio’s copy can be a valuable addition. Strong CTAs significantly increase the likelihood users will take the action you’re describing, because they explain exactly what to do and how to do it.

There are a number of different actions you can prioritize in your bio (you can even squeeze in a couple of different CTAs) so consider what would be most valuable to your business and make room for that.

Here are some approaches you can take with your CTAs:

Leesa , for example, has two CTAs in its Instagram bio: one encouraging users to share and tag it in content and the other driving users to click the link and learn more about its products.

No matter the CTA you use, there are a few best practices to keep in mind:

Keep in mind that you can adapt your bio to promote special events, like a seasonal sale, contest, or upcoming trade show. You can always swap in new CTAs and links to prioritize limited time offers or events.

4. Make the most of your bio link

With swipe-up Story links and Shopping on Instagram , there are plenty of options to drive traffic to your site. But your Instagram bio link is still a valuable opportunity to send profile visitors to any page you’d like them to visit—whether it’s a Kickstarter campaign, a YouTube video, or your latest blog post.

Many brands link out to their website’s homepage by default until they have the chance to promote something specific, like this example from RT1home :

You can also link to:

Just be sure to adapt your bio copy to incorporate a CTA for your new link when you add one.

If you want to track how effective your bio link is at driving traffic relative to other Instagram sources, you can use a URL shortener like Bitly , along with UTM tracking, to measure click-throughs.

Whatever you choose, keep your goals in mind and how you’ll achieve them in your business profile and content. You can change your bio link as often as you want and increase its effectiveness by letting users know in individual posts and stories to check out your bio link for more info.

5. Adding “Action Buttons” to help users reach you

Speaking from experience, it’s extremely common for users to contact you after they come across your brand on Instagram.

Sometimes they’ll send you a direct message, but if that’s their only option it can quickly become hard to manage. That’s why it’s important to direct customers to your preferred channels, whether it’s a phone number, email, or even directions to your store if you have a physical location.

Filling out your contact information on Instagram shifts most of this responsibility from your written bio to the appropriate “action buttons” that customers can easily find when they visit your profile.

You can do this by editing your profile and tapping Contact Options.

edit instagram profile

From here, you can enter contact information or channels that make it easy for customers to reach you, such as:

edit instagram project options

People will use the contact information you provide, so only enter information for customer service channels you actually support. If you don’t have a phone line dedicated for customer support, don’t add in your personal phone number just because you want to have something there.

This contact info will appear as clickable buttons on your profile when viewed through Instagram’s mobile app.

6. Enable Shopping on Instagram to showcase your products

You may have noticed the Shop action button in some of the examples above.

The Shop tab will appear by default after you set up Shopping on Instagram and start tagging images with product tags. You can easily set this up in your own Shopify store.

The Shop tab is also home to all the content featuring your product tags, giving users the opportunity to shop your collection through the photos you’ve posted. They can tap on any of these photos to view them and to learn more about the products featured and tap once more to visit the product page on your website to make a purchase.

Try to only use product tags on photos that clearly show off your products in order to create a carefully curated gallery under your Shop tab. Here’s what the Shop tab looks like for the Lucky Tackle Box Instagram:

7. Curate Highlights for your profile

Instagram Stories are an essential part of Instagram marketing, and Story Highlights give them a longer lasting presence on your profile. Highlights allow you to save individual Stories into different “highlights,” which you get to name and organize as you see fit.

These Highlights will live in your profile indefinitely, right underneath your bio, above your feed, and when clicked will show the saved Stories one after another. United By Blue has Stories curated for product collections, its environmental cleanups, its online store, news, and press.

United By Blue Instagram Bio

Not only will your expired Stories of the day be given a longer lifespan, but you’ll be able to feature content that strongly represents your brand at the top of your feed, where users are most likely to see it.

This gives you a chance to control the narrative, and even produce Stories with the express purpose of turning them into Highlights.

Creating Highlights is easy:

There are countless ways you can organize your Highlights, but some of the more common themes include:

8. Share a "social media only" promo code

To give followers extra incentive to jump over to your site and make a purchase, consider putting a coupon code in your bio. Nutriseed does this in its Instagram bio, offering followers 10% off their first order.

Discounts and promo codes are proven conversion drivers. Not only do they drive users to your site to make a purchase, they also give you a more accurate way to track these conversions. Use a code unique in your Instagram bio so you can see exactly how many sales you’re driving.

Then dig deeper into the data and see what those people are buying. Use those insights to inform your Instagram strategy. If there’s lots of interest in a particular product, do a Q&A on your Stories about it. Partner with a local Instagram influencer to promote your brand. The possibilities for insights truly are endless.

9. Leverage IGTV

IGTV is an extension of Instagram that lets brands create videos up to an hour long (versus 60 seconds with a standard video post). These IGTV streams happen live and are then published to your main page so users can tune in later.

Kylie Cosmetics has built a strong loyal base of customers largely thanks to the influence of social media. The makeup brand frequently uses IGTV to publish makeup tutorials by founder Kylie Jenner and outside influencers.

IGTV

Though product tutorials may seem a straightforward strategy, brands are also pushing creative boundaries with IGTV. Bacardi, for example, used it to create a music video with Grammy-winning artists—it even gave followers the role of director, allowing them to be a part of the process.

You might not be ready to make a full-blown music video, but there are tons of other ways to use IGTV to enhance your Instagram bio:

my bio instagram

Welcome! You're here because you are trying to find your favorite Instagram account's "link in bio." But all you've found is a dark vortex of confusion. You're forced to pass up recipe after recipe, article after article, because you can't find this elusive link.

Would it be easier if people, businesses, and publishers could share links directly in their post captions? Probably. But we need to work with what we've got. Which is why, instead of being able to click directly into a website URL within a post caption, Instagram directs you to the "link in bio" to view the rest of the article, photo gallery, recipe, or what-have-you, in its entirety. The meaning, at least, is pretty literal: Click into the account's bio (or main profile) to find an external link to something on their (or another) website.

For the record: It's not you. It is counterintuitive, although it's not as difficult as you think (promise!). I, myself, had to swallow my pride and let my 14-year-old cousin explain the process to me—so believe me when I say, I've walked in your shoes. But once you learn how to find a link in bio on Instagram, the world is yours for the reading.

Here to help you navigate—and ensure you never miss another recipe, story, or list of tips from your IG accounts—is a step-by-step guide to finding the link in bio on Instagram. (Note that these specific steps and images cater to a mobile user experience, but they translate easily for desktop Instagram use.)

And if you don't have the time or patience to read every step (or just need a brief refresher), below is a quick and handy Instagram video walk-through:

Step One: Getting From Feed to Bio

While scrolling through your Instagram feed, you come across a cool post, read the caption, and bam —you're asked to "head to the link in our bio" for the whole story.

Let's say it's a Real Simple post you're after. In the upper left corner of your screen, you'll find the circular Real Simple profile photo and account name/handle, "real_simple". Tap the Instagram handle itself to get to the account bio and post grid. (Tapping directly on the circular profile photo will lead you straight to Instagram Stories—not the bio.)

Step Two: Identify the Link

Every Instagram user has the option to customize their bio. In addition to adding a description, Emojis, hashtags, and the like, they can also choose to share links to external webpages that their followers and customers can access and read without needing to exit the Instagram app. Locate the link (it will look something like the one pictured and circled to the right) and give it a single tap. A new window should slide up from the bottom of your screen.

Step Three: Find the Story You're Looking for

Tapping the bio link will open a new window with a secondary grid. This is where you want to be. It will look almost identical to the original image grid, except that each image in this secondary grid leads to an external link. The newer the post, the closer to the top it'll be.

Don't see the post you set out for? Don't panic. Simply scroll down the grid until you find it. When you do, tap or click on it once to open the corresponding link. (If it's not there, they may have forgotten to add a URL to their Instagram post—it happens.)

Step Four: Enjoy

We made it! A new link will appear on your screen that's ready to read, share, save, copy, etc. To toggle back to the secondary grid and read more bio links (we won't stop you), tap the back arrow in the bottom left corner of your screen; to return completely to the account's main Instagram page, hit the X in the upper left corner.

How to Center or Reposition Your Instagram Bio

Robert Hayes Robert is a freelance editor and writer living in Colorado. Read more August 29, 2021

Your bio is an essential element of your profile on Instagram. Although it is limited to 150 characters, it is one of the three things that other Instagram users have to look at to gauge whether they want to follow you or not. Of course, the other two things are your username and your most recent selection of posts and stories.

One common technique used to increase the visual appeal of your bio and make it “pop” is to center or reposition the bio text . Centering/repositioning the text means inserting spaces on each line so that the overall effect is to make your bio look centered, indented, or stylish on the screen when someone looks at it.

Word-processing programs like Microsoft Word include automatic centering features that let you select a block of text and hit a button, and poof, it is instantly centered. Instagram, unfortunately, does not have this functionality. However, centering your bio is quite simple, and in this article, you’ll see a simple technique to get your bio displaying where you want it.

Instagram Bio Character Limit

While you’re typing your bio on an iPhone or Android device, one handy feature is the character count that displays in the lower right-hand corner of the text box. The count shows you how many characters are left in your allowance of 150 .

The PC version does not appear to include a character count feature.

Spaces count against the character limit, including nonbonding spaces —more on that later.

Yes, the spaces used to format your text count against the 150-character limit.

Use Nonbinding Spaces to Position or Center Your Bio

In the Instagram Bio text box, you’ll want to add spaces to the left-hand side of each row of text that you want to center or position differently. If your text strings are relatively short, adding about nine spaces to the left of each row will put your text near the center of the screen on most phones. You’ll want to add more or less space depending on if your text strings are longer or shorter. You’re going to run into one problem, though. Instagram insists on left-justifying every line in your bio . That means that each line starts with the first visible character, not spaces.

The only way to get your Instagram Bio lines to the center or appear where you want them to is to use nonbinding spaces. There’s no need to go into technicalities, but these gaps are essentially coded differently in HTML and will let you bypass the line glitch in Instagram’s code.

Nonbinding spaces prevent whitespace and two-part text such as “liquid-based” and “T & T Disks,” for example, from separating into the current row and next row, yet they serve as spacers in this particular case.

Nonbinding spaces used for copy/paste functionality in your Instagram Bio are not creatable in a text app, note-taker, or document creator . Sure, MS Word and Google Docs have a way to insert nonbinding/nonbreaking spaces, but it won’t work for your Bio unless you copy it from HTML, which uses “ ” (excluding the quotes) as the code. Don’t bother viewing source code or using the “Inspect element” to see the “ ” characters. They often appear as blank spaces, ironically.

Anyways, editing your Instagram Bio is simple. Using a PC is best so you can easily copy/paste the nonbreaking spaces. Still, it is also possible on Android and iPhone because we incorporated the nonbreaking spaces in the steps below, so your smartphone or tablet can easily copy them as well. Regardless, with a couple of clicks or taps, you can position your bio any way you want, including centering it. Here’s how.

Center/Position Your Instagram Bio in Windows

Center/Reposition Your Instagram Bio in Android and iOS/iPhone

Other Types of Instagram Bio Effects

Centering isn’t the only type of text formatting that can give your bio some visual flair. For example, you can stagger your bio by increasing the indent on each successive line. For example:

Good Example:

Bad Example:

Notice that the second example tiered less fluidly because the last line was too short. Also, it doesn’t highlight the contact information in the same way that a centered bio would.

Think about what you want your followers and potential followers to take away from your bio, how your bio reads, and what information you’d like to highlight.

When Not to Center a Bio

Sometimes, your profile is better served by not having a centered bio, which comes with downsides, including:

Overall, c entering or staggering your bio on Instagram can definitely help make your profile stand out in the crowd. Whether you’re looking to help show off your contact information or want to make your bio look more attractive, centering and staggering text on Instagram is surprisingly easy.

Inspirational Instagram bio quotes

More Instagram bio examples

Here’s a story. Back in 2020 (lightyears ago in social media), before the SERP for “Instagram bios” became invaded by hundreds-long lists of cliche copy/paste Instagram bios, Conor Bond curated a list of inspiring, funny, and cool Instagram bios and talked about why they work. This is that post.

Good Instagram bios

1. tree house brewing co..

instagram bios tree house brewing co

Nothing flashy or catchy here. Just really solid copy. Uniquely delicious beers crafted with pride & purpose. Plain and simple, this first sentence works because it’s a strong, succinct value proposition. Brewer owned & operated tells us this is a company you can feel good about doing business with. Founded in a small red barn in 2011 paints a picture of a company that started as nothing and turned into something.

instagram bios shopify

There’s nothing wrong with aspiring towards profitability. That is, after all, how you keep the lights on. But if you want your Instagram bio to truly make an impact on the people who see it, marketing yourself as a mission-driven organization goes a long way. In the case of Shopify, that means highlighting their support for small, independent businesses .

3. Instagram

instagram bios instagram

Sure, Instagram could be ultra-literal and change their bio to something like this: For free entertainment during Bachelor in Paradise commercials . As much as people appreciate self-awareness, I think Instagram made the right call with this bio. It’s short, it’s sweet, and it aligns the brand with a more meaningful purpose.

4. Apple Music

instagram bios applemusic

Nothing complicated to dissect here—just an awesome, memorable value proposition that makes you feel silly for not subscribing to Apple Music. I know I’ve emphasized using your Instagram bio to market yourself as an organization on a mission, but by no means is that a hard-and-fast rule. If you can do what Apple Music does here—i.e., write a no-nonsense value prop that jolts your prospects into action —you’ll be in fantastic shape.

Funny Instagram bios

5. friskies.

instagram bios friskies

This Instagram bio manages to both communicate value and make the visitor laugh (or, y’know, vaguely smile). The value, of course, is that Friskies is an inexpensive alternative to other brands of cat food. “An inexpensive alternative to other brands of cat food,” however, is a pretty lousy tagline; it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. If you can package your value in a clever one-liner, do it.

instagram bios moonpie

If you can’t come up with a clever one-liner, you can always take the MoonPie approach—i.e., say something ridiculous. Consumers appreciate a brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

instagram bios twitter

Evidently, social media companies are good at social media marketing . Twitter’s Instagram bio is funny because it’s so brazenly unfunny. Fortunately, this anti-joke strategy is one that plenty of businesses can use. Friskies, for example, could switch their bio to this: Pictures of cats and the food products they enjoy. Elsewhere, a music school could score some laughs with something like this: We’ll teach you how to play music if you agree to give us money .

8. Pop-Tarts

instagram bios poptarts

Some brands can successfully market themselves as agents of positive change (and, indeed, be agents of positive change!). But let’s be frank: If Pop-Tarts shifted to a socially conscious brand image, consumers would probably see right through it. Self-awareness is key. Pop-Tarts understands the role it plays in the world at large, doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. Even with something as seemingly harmless as an Instagram bio, it’s important to know thyself.

Cool Instagram bios

9. ford motor company.

instagram bios ford

Sometimes, you have to flex. Call me crazy, but I’ve never met someone who’s comfortable doing business with a company they don’t trust. And if there’s one thing that inspires trust in a prospective customer, it’s authority. If you want to model your Instagram bio after Ford’s, I suggest brainstorming the accomplishments and innovations that separate your business from the rest. And who knows, you may also find yourself ready for some Instagram advertising.

10. The University of Connecticut

instagram bios uconn

In case you needed another example of a braggadocious Instagram bio, we’ve got this winner from UConn. This bio isn’t simply saying, “We’re awesome” but rather “We’re awesome in a wide variety of ways.” Tons of academic disciplines? Nice. Extraordinary athletic achievements? Thats cool. A husky named Jonathan? Sounds fun. Your Instagram bio is the perfect place to succinctly outline a handful of characteristics that make your business unique . Industry awards, office amenities, forward-thinking employee initiatives—if you’re proud of it, put it in your Instagram bio for all to behold.

11. The Intercept

instagram bios intercept

One way to craft a cool Instagram bio is to write a super brief, super impactful tagline that’s guaranteed to stick in your visitors’ minds. Of course, your tagline shouldn’t just be memorable ; it should faithfully communicate the mission, purpose, or impact of your brand. In its bio, The Intercept highlights the hard-nosed manner in which they conduct their journalism.

Here’s a few ideas for different businesses we’ve discussed so far:

12. Sleep Number

instagram bios sleep number

Clearly, whoever manages Sleep Number’s social media presence went to The Intercept School of Instagram Bios. Brief? Yup. Memorable? Absolutely. Faithful representation of the value delivered to customers? You better believe it.

I should be clear: A cool Instagram bio isn’t going to result in immediate conversions. Instead, it’s going to capture mindshare . A truly killer tagline will improve the likelihood that a prospect remembers your brand name when they’re ready to begin their customer journey.

Creative Instagram bios

13. the montague bookmill.

instagram bios bookmill

Well-written copy can inspire a sense of curiosity in your prospects, encouraging them to proactively learn more about your business. Once they take the first step to learn more—by clicking the link in your Instagram bio, for instance—they’re officially inside your marketing funnel. This example from the beloved Montague Bookmill is a fantastic example of such a curiosity gap . It’s not only memorable—it’s legitimately mysterious . If that’s not a surefire way to drive website traffic , I’m not sure what is.

14. Angel Soft

instagram bios angelsoft

“Be soft, be strong” is a nice tagline—a short, sweet, and memorable encapsulation of what you’re looking for in bathroom products. But what makes this a truly creative Instagram bio is the way Angel Soft connects its tagline to a broader message about humanity: People are both soft and strong, which is why our products are too . This added layer of sentimentality that helps Angel Soft humanize its brand as a business that sincerely cares about people.

15. SeatGeek

instagram bios seatgeek

The underlying message of this bio a powerful one: Our platform will connect you to tickets for literally any event you can think of . In an industry with several major players—Ticketmaster, StubHub, Gametime—establishing a high degree of authority is important. Furthermore, this is yet another example of a tagline that you can’t help but remember. When you decide to look for tickets to your next show, they’ll probably be the company at that comes to mind.

16. Planet Fitness

instagram bios pf

Establishing your authority isn’t the only way to build trust. Planet Fitness takes a relatability approach by expressing its affinity for memes, pizza, and long (presumably casual) walks on the treadmill. This effectively undermines the stereotype of the self-serious gym and lets prospects feel good about its silly and laid-back side—a nice way to stand out in your industry.

Cute Instagram bios

instagram bios skippy

Maybe this example strikes some of you as low-hanging fruit, but if the goal of your Instagram bio is to show off your brand’s personality and make a positive first impression, a pun can do the trick. And while you may be tempted to assume that this approach fails to communicate authority, I’d argue that it takes confidence to do what Skippy’s doing here. Only a brand that’s sure of itself (and the value it delivers to consumers) would commit to a silly, punny Instagram bio.

18. Alaska Airlines

instagram bios alaska airlines

This Instagram bio communicates both that Alaska Airlines has high standards of customer service and that it likes to have fun. Everyone has a nightmare travel story, but the Alaska Airlines Instagram bio reassures you that you’re in the right hands. And the Fly smart. Land happy tagline? You’re not going to find too many taglines more catchy or effective than that.

instagram bios google

OK, Google! I’ll be honest: I wouldn’t have expected Google to bring the heat with its Instagram bio. Alas, here we are. In addition to this easy, lighthearted (and photography!) pun, there’s also a curiosity gap here. “What does ‘Google unfiltered’ even mean?” You can’t help but scroll through its feed to find out.

instagram bios lego

This bio from LEGO conveys a real sense of escapism. No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve got going on in your life, you’re welcome to use LEGO’s Instagram profile as a source of joy—or even inspiration. Many people use Instagram purely to escape from the anxieties of everyday life. So, for example, if you’re marketing a cafe, it’s totally fair game to make your Instagram bio something like this: Life is stressful. Take a break and look at pictures of lattes.

Inspirational Instagram bios

instagram bios wework

Unfortunately, a lot of folks find themselves with jobs that don’t quite excite them. What makes WeWork’s an effective Instagram bio is its play on a common phrase make a living . Can you think of any figures of speech that closely relate to the product or service you provide? For a travel agency, “find yourself” could work. Sometimes, finding yourself means going somewhere you’ve never been . Inspirational, no?

22. Patagonia

instagram bios patagonia

An inspirational Instagram bio is easy when your company is aligned with a very specific mission, like Patagonia. Consumers appreciate a company that’s sure of itself and its place in the world. But even if your business isn’t directly affiliated with a specific mission, you can still learn from Patagonia. For example, a textbook company’s bio could be Enabling the brilliant minds of students everywhere since 1978. The key is to emphasize the impact of your product or service has—regardless of whether that impact is your top priority. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

23. Starbucks

instagram bios starbucks

Does each and every Starbucks employee wake up in the morning and think, “I’m going to inspire and nurture the human spirit today?” Not likely. It’s probably more like “I hope we don’t run out of the nitro cold brew again.”

But Starbucks’ Instagram bio works. As corny as it may sound, it’s true. People rely on coffee to function. And friendships are built and maintained over coffee. To many, Starbucks is both a provider of energy and a conduit to social life. When writing your Instagram bio, think big . Your bookshop is more than a bookshop; it’s a doorway to thrilling adventures, hilarious stories, and sobering histories.

instagram bios aerie

In the women’s apparel industry, which is criticized for subjecting consumers to unattainable beauty standards, Aerie has found success by promoting body positivity. If your product or service subverts the stereotype associated with your industry, I strongly encourage you to make that the focal point of your Instagram bio! Not only is that subversion a key part of your value proposition; it’s also a way to demonstrate self-awareness and earn your prospects’ trust.

25. world of vegan.

How else can you make clear who you are? By giving more information about the faces behind your brand. World of Vegan includes its photographer’s Instagram handle in its bio as well as a link to its YouTube account where users can further familiarize with the brand.

To add personality to your bio, you can change your fonts, add line breaks, and use emojis. Yet, you can also show personality in the words themselves, as Puma Women does.

Make it clear for whom your account is best suited. By using keywords such as animal cruelty and pet adoption, the ASPCA attracts followers who care about those things. Including key phrases relevant to what you do won’t improve rankings as on a search engine . But, it does help to vet and hook the people who visit your profile.

28. Zach King

Instead of linking to another one of your social media profiles in your Instagram bio, consider linking to a piece of content , as Zach King does below. Note also that he describes what the link is and asks people to take action. People are often hesitant to click on links when they don’t know where they’ll lead. A description alone can be powerful, but the addition of a call to action can prompt people who don’t pay attention to these links.

best instagram rofiles zachking

This is the only permanent clickable link you can have on Instagram. That said, you’ll want to do all you can to increase its appeal.

29. Mercedes

How else can you move people to action via your Instagram bio? With a branded hashtag , as Mercedes AMG F1 does. #DrivenByEachOther has at least two benefits. One, various official posts use that hashtag, so Mercedes sees increased engagement on its posts. Two, Formula One fans create their own posts using the hashtag. This also boosts the company’s exposure.

best instagram pofiles mercedes benz

Are you looking for ways to increase engagement on your posts? What about ways to encourage the submission of user-generated content ? A branded hashtag could be the way to go.

Got any cool Instagram bio ideas?

Share them in the comments and we’ll add them to the list! There are so many approaches to take with your Instagram bio, and the best part is, it’s not permanent. Make it inspiring this month, funny next month, or adjust it with the seasons. When you think outside the box, the possibilities with these 150 characters are endless.

How to Add a Link to Your Instagram Bio

Braden Becker

Updated: April 27, 2021

Published: September 16, 2020

Every social network makes it clear how to put a link in your bio on their platform -- except Instagram.

how to put a link in instagram bio

Twitter lets you tag other handles in your bio. LinkedIn gives you the ability to link yourself to your employer's official page. Facebook allows you to tag a number of different businesses, interest pages, and people in your "About" section, so you can let friends know who you work for, what brands you like, your alma mater, your relationship status, and so on.

What about Instagram?

Until recently, Instagram didn't give you a ton of space to brand your profile with hashtags and profile handles -- you could only link to their respective pages in photo captions. Websites were the only types of links you could put in your bio (hence the common phrase "link in bio").

What does "link in bio" mean on Instagram?

If an Instagram user addresses their audience with the phrase "link in bio," it means they are directing them to go to their Instagram profile's bio section to access the clickable URL for the website they're promoting.

"Link in bio" is essentially a call to action, promoting more information available outside of Instagram's parameters.

But Instagram recently gifted us two new features: linkable profiles and hashtags, right in your bio. You can now add them alongside the link to your website.

Note: The instructions above apply to the latest version of Instagram -- 37.0 on iOS. You can also edit your bio on Instagram's website by navigating to your profile and clicking "Edit Profile" next to your name.

On the screen to the left, below, you can see how Instagram suggests popular hashtags as you edit the bio text field, just like it would when you add a hashtag to a picture's caption. On the screen to the right, you'll see the profile of a person who uses hashtags, profile links, and websites in her bio.

Things have changed at Instagram as of late, and you now have options to link to other pages you identify with right beneath your Instagram profile picture. But keep in mind that users who don't want their profile tagged in others' bios can opt to untag themselves.

It's best to reserve this space for the accounts you know would agree with the association you're making.

Now you know the triggers to create a good Instagram bio.

But how to apply those rules when writing your Instagram bio?

Here, I show you the steps.

5 Steps to Level-up your Instagram Bio in 2023

Truth is, there is no perfect profile description.

But it is important to make one that best represents your personality and brand image.

Also, to bring more business opportunities like raising brand awareness with branded hashtags

Or driving more traffic to your websites with links in bio.

How to do it?

Here, I give you the best tips to level up your bio creation on Instagram.

1. Optimize your Instagram Profile name

The very first step is to make your Instagram profile searchable.

It helps you reach out to people outside of your current audience.

This is a bit tricky as you must fill up to 30 characters limit and write a representative display name.

Take a look at this. I type “dietitian” on the search bar, then the results are:

Instagram profile names found on search results with the same keyword

In case you don’t know, Instagram has included names and usernames in its search queries.

Make sure to optimize your Instagram profile name so more people will come to your account.

“Dietitian is a popular, common term, how to optimize when I don’t know what to call myself?”

No worries.

Put some keywords that match with what you’re doing that users might search for.

That way, your account has the possibility to be found by people who type using the keyword “makeup tutorials”.

2. Show your skills/offers & target audience on your Instagram Bio

The best Instagram bio is where the visitor knows what you or your business does and for whom.

So, it’s important to show your skills/offers & target audience in your bio.

If you have specific skills, such as makeup artist, diver, or cooker, mention them in your bio.

An Instagram bio with mentioned skills from a creator

And if you run a business, it’s much better to add your value proposition to your bio.

Summarize what visitors can expect from your profile on your Instagram bio in one glance.

3. Use relevant keywords on your Instagram Bio

Don’t stop using keywords only on your Instagram profile.

Use them on your Instagram bio too.

It may not boost your discoverability on the search results, but it helps the visitors to understand in a glimpse,

what values you are offering to your audience? Also, the concise description will connect you with like-minded followers.

Green Matters says that the account is made to provide news about sustainability to everyone.

“Provide”, “News”, and “Sustainability” are the keywords used by Green Matters.

It’s easier for people to look for a news portal about sustainability when looking at Green Matters’ bio.

And you should do the same.

4. Be creative when writing your Instagram bio

Your biography section is your free canvas, so you can use it with your creativity.

Why make a boring remark when you can get creative?

Follow these steps to enhance your bio-writing to the next level.

First things first, make use of emojis!

You can’t enter texts in the description, so the best way to space out the texts are through emojis or symbols.

You can also use emojis to highlight your CTAs.

A creative Instagram bio filled with emojis from an Indonesian creator

Using emojis will make your bio more lively and bright.

Also, it helps you to tidy up your scrappy texts.

If you don’t want to look ‘too cheeky’ when using emojis, you can try the second tip.

Use line breaks.

Another way to give your bio space is by adding line breaks.

However, this can only be done when you edit it on your desktop.

When you don’t use any emoji, your bio will just look like plain text.

Line breaks help you make your bios not look scrappy and more consumable.

Move on to the third tip: include branded hashtags.

Branded hashtags are a great way to inform users about your ongoing giveaways, campaigns, etc.

They are lowkey an invitation to join the event and generate high engagement.

See this Indonesian beauty brand puts the #FeelThePower on its description box,

Inviting the visitors to share their experience using the products.

An Instagram bio with a branded hashtag included

Remember that now users can follow a hashtag, right?

Putting branded hashtags on your bio can help raise brand awareness,

as users will see your brand more often by following the hashtags.

And the last tip: attach a Link in your bio.

If you run a website-based business, this is very beneficial for your company.

It is noticeable and will drive very valuable traffic to your website.

There are a lot of Instagram scheduler tools that provide the Link-in-bio feature.

With the feature, you can put whatever link you want,

from your online store to the published posts, and direct them to the event, blog, etc.

Try these solutions if some links are not working on your Instagram biography.

5. Add a strong call to action (CTA) on your Instagram Bio

Putting only a link to your bio is vague.

What link is that? Your online store? Your product catalog? The winner list of your ongoing giveaways?

Whatever it is, you just can’t put a link without informing your audience about what it is.

Not only that, you need to encourage them to click the link.

The best thing to actualize the idea: create powerful call-to-action phrases.

An Instagram bio with a call to action and direct link

To make a strong call to action:

Tease your audience, use a word to invite such as grab, join, order, etc, and create a sense of urgency.

For example: “Special offer only on the weekends. Grab your seat here 👇”

That way, your link will not go to waste and it helps you drive more traffic than ever.

Do you think your current Instagram Bio is worth sharing?

Let us know in the comment section below and help others to get inspired

What is a short bio?

A short bio is a short paragraph that considers a brief introduction to the Instagram profile. It consists of personal branding, business offers, business information & links, and many more. The little space given by Instagram forces you to be creative to present yourself. You can add your skills, achievement, life value, etc.

How do you write a 3 sentence bio?

Try to express these 3 objectives: Tell the readers who you are and what you do/offer. Explain your brand personality. Put a strong CTA to encourage readers to find out more about you. Elaborate on what you will write, then write one clear and concise sentence for each objective.

Should I put my age in my Instagram bio?

It’s not that necessary.  For some young influencers, having a big influence and audience on Instagram may be their biggest achievement at such a young age, so they proudly put their age on their bio. However, many suggest that you don’t have to tell everyone about your age.

Instagram Bio: 10+ Ideas and Examples for Amazing Instagram Bios in 2021

Photo of Kyra Goodman

Writing a good Instagram bio seems so darn simple, doesn’t it?

Well, only until you actually sit down to do it, that is.

Because the moment you begin, you quickly realize that there’s more to it than just adding a line about yourself and your contact information.

In this guide, you’ll discover more than 10 ideas, tricks, and examples of good Instagram bios to help you create an amazing bio for your brand.

Ready? Let’s take it from the top, then.

What is an Instagram Bio?

The Instagram bio is a section of your overall profile, located underneath your Instagram username, where you can list information about yourself or your business.

And it’s what you include there that can make or break the first impression someone will make about you.

Overall, the bio should include a short description of you or the business, your contact information, any hashtags that are relevant to you, emojis, if you want, and of course, your website URL.

The problem? How to put it all together to make a lasting and good first impression…

How to Create a Good Instagram Bio

We’ve all seen those Instagram bios that stop us in our tracks—the ones that are so cleverly written they make us want to instantly follow that account.

“That’s what our brand’s Instagram bio needs to be like,” you tell yourself as you continue to admire that profile.

But, here’s the truth: Writing about yourself or your own brand is hard.

Even the most clever writers struggle with crafting a solid bio. And, that challenge becomes even tougher when you only have 150 characters to get your point across—all while being impactful and engaging.

Are your palms sweaty yet? We don’t blame you. Knowing just want to put in your brand’s Instagram bio is tough.

Fortunately, there are some key tips you can put into place to craft good Instagram bio that’s just as attention-grabbing as the ones you always admire.

Instagram for Business 101

Why Your Instagram Bio Matters

Before you roll up your sleeves and get into the Instagram bio ideas and tips we’ve got for you, it’s important to understand the role that your Instagram bio plays in your overall strategy.

Yes, your Instagram bio is short. But, it’s still important.

Think of your bio as the elevator pitch for your entire account. It shares who you are and what you do. That’s important information for users to know when they’re deciding whether or not your account is worth a follow.

Think about it this way: Would you want to engage in a continued relationship with someone who shook your hand, said his or her name, and then that was it? Probably not.

The same holds true for your Instagram bio—it’s your chance to introduce your brand and make a positive impression that encourages people to hit that “follow” button.

How to Write a Damn-Good Instagram Bio

Alright, so a good Instagram bio is crucial. But, how can you piece together a solid one for your own brand? Here’s what you need to know.

#1: Keep it Simple

Let’s start with the basics: The name that appears at the top of your bio.

While it’s tempting to branch out and get creative there, it’s best to list the actual name of your brand.

So, for example, you should list “Pinecone Outdoor Outfitters” instead of something catchy like “All About the Outdoors”.

Why is this important?

When interested people seek out your brand on Instagram, they’re probably going to use your name.

If that doesn’t appear there, you won’t show up in the results—and, rest assured, people won’t spend a ton of timing looking for your account if you don’t immediately pop up.

If you do want to get a little more creative with your Instagram name, you do have one solid option.

Check out this example from Headspace (mindfulness app):

Good Instagram Bios Ideas.

Outside of your name, you should aim to keep the entirety of your bio relatively simple and straightforward as well. As we mentioned, it’s your digital elevator pitch—meaning you want to get to the gist of who you are and what you do. This doesn’t need to be a long-winded manifesto.

Just ask yourself this one simple question: What would you say if you were shaking someone’s hand and introducing your brand at a networking event?

That simple inquiry will help you zone in on those important details that you should be sure to touch on within your bio.

#2: Zone in on Keywords

You know the importance of keywords. While they aren’t searchable within your Instagram bio the way you might expect them to be, including some keywords relevant to your audience and your niche can be helpful.

Grab a notepad and jot down some words that people would be looking for that relate to your brand, products, or services.

By identifying and then including some of these more obvious words that your followers might expect to see, you make it that much more clear who you are and what you do. When you do that? Your target audience will be able to recognize when they’re in the right place.

#3: Don’t Be Afraid of Emojis

While some people deem them unprofessional, emojis can be a great addition to your Instagram profile.

Not only do they help to add some personality to a block of text that could otherwise be a little stiff, they also help to break up your text and make the entire bio easier to read.

“I always love seeing emojis in an IG bio,” shares Lindsay White in an article for Huffington Post , “Mostly because it’s unexpected. In a world of business, seriousness, and corporate talk, it’s nice to see emojis where they would normally not belong.”

So, don’t hesitate to incorporate a few fun graphics in your own bio. It’s a fun touch that helps you stand out.

And don’t forget to use emojis in your posts as well! Sked Social makes it super convenient to add them to your post captions and first comments while scheduling your photos, videos, and carousels to post automatically .

#4: Leverage Your Link(s)

If there’s one thing that frustrates marketers, it’s how strict Instagram is with clickable links.

In fact, your bio is the only place where you can include a link that your followers can actually click.

With that in mind, you want to make the most of it.

Your website homepage is an obvious choice—and, in many cases, it’s also the best one.

However, if you want to mix it up why by adding more than one link, use Sked Link to direct followers to additional links.

Many brands also opt to frequently switch out the link they include in their Instagram bio to have it point to something specific—such as a new blog post for example.

Then, in the caption of a new Instagram post, they’ll write “link in profile” as a workaround to direct users to that specific page.

This can be effective. But, it’s worth it to note that Instagram’s algorithm means that users’ feeds no longer appear in chronological order.

So, if you’re frequently switching up your bio link, your Instagram posts might be directing some users to a link that is no longer there.

The good news is though, if you’re a Sked user, you can use our Sked Link feature to set up a multi-link landing page.

With Sked Link, we do all the heavy “linking” for you. Simply place your unique Sked Link in your bio to share more than 1 link with your followers.

Your Sked Link dashboard consists of three main sections – build, design and integrate. All of which come in very handy to create that killer Sked Link for driving more traffic, sales, newsletter sign-ups and opportunities.

One of Sked Link’s best features is the ability to add your Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics ID on your personalized Sked Link. This is fantastic for remarketing purposes and tracking the traffic you’re attracting to your Sked Link directly from Instagram.

TIP: While you won’t find a lot of flexibility in terms of linking on Instagram, by switching over to a business profile , you can include buttons that allow users to get in touch with you—meaning you’ll have more direct calls to action and clickable functions within your profile. Not that’s a good Instagram bio tip!

#5: Use Your Branded Hashtag

A good Instagram bio isn’t complete without a brand-specific hashtag. With that hashtag in place, users can tag their own photos so that the brand can see them—and potentially even repost them on their own Instagram account.

It’s called user-generated content .

And, it’s not only helpful for engaging your users, but it also helps you to fill up your own Instagram feed with photos you don’t need to create yourself. It’s a win-win.

And if you do have a branded hashtag, include it in your Instagram bio. It’ll serve as a constant reminder to your followers about what hashtag you’d like them to use, while featuring it in an easy-to-reference place where they won’t have to go hunting for it.

NOTE: For whatever reason, hashtags that you include in your bio aren’t clickable on mobile. But, they are using Instagram’s web interface.

#6: Be Human

This tip is especially important to keep in mind when you’re writing an Instagram bio for your brand—rather than one for an individual account.

Companies have a way of seeming somewhat far-away and untouchable. But, when marketing on social media, you don’t want that to be the case. You want to seem personable and relatable.

For that reason, skip the stiff, corporate speak or slogans and write a bio that is a little more warm, friendly, and captures your brand’s voice.

People will be much more willing to interact with your account if you don’t seem like a rigid salesperson all the time!

Over to You

Even though it’s only a measly 150 characters, good Instagram bios are your path to success on Instagram.

But, even so, crafting a good Instagram bio for your own brand can be deceptively tough. Fortunately, there are a few tips you can implement to remove some stress from the process and come up with a bio that you can be proud of. In order to do so, remember to:

Put those tips into play, and you’re sure to piece together an Instagram bio that’s equally as awesome as those ones you always admire.
